Quoted text begins.Stainless is the cheapest, strongest and the most reliable in my book.
But will it last for centuries? The mother metal in stainless is
steel or iron and they have a high rate of corrosion. Maybe some one
with more knowledge than I could weigh in on the subject.
End of quote.

If it's maintained, yes. Nothing will last forever if it's ignored.
Actually, in the end, nothing will last forever, period...in a few
billion years everything we do will be vaporized when the sun swallows
the planet...but in the meantime, if properly maintained, it should
last. I've personally handled iron artifacts from the 16th century
that are in fine shape. I've also handled steel items made fairly
recently that haven't fared as well.

Please note that I'm not weighing in on whether stainless or bronze is
better for this particular application.

Curious as to why stone "dowels" couldn't be made, and used, for the
statue mounting?
