If the alternative was having it "schlobbed" back together with glue and
mortar, I would would prefer to have it restored to its former glory.
Chances are the column was carved to the specs of some master mason of the
day, by a separate carver, therefore not like it would be replacing an
original masterpiece such as "David" or the like. I think they are two very
different cases to consider... I attended a restoration conference in
eastern Canada a year and a half ago and met the same kind of thinking, but
there are some AWFUL looking patch jobs in that town!!
