Old stone repair?
Quoted text begins. This probably depends on the quality of the carving, the present
function of the column and whether it is part of some larger structure
or monument. We all make distinctions between things that are
functional and things that have historic or artistic value.
End of quote.
To clarify a bit: It was a 400 - 500 year old French marble column that had
been standing alone in a garden as an ornament. Playing kids accidentally
knocked it over and it broke. In Europe it probably wouldn't be so special
but in the US it is.
Its bothered me for a couple years that my boss and I threw it back together
again without investigating proper conservation techniques. For example,
Portland cement on centuries-old marble seems wrong. But would a lime-rich
mortar have enough strength? Should we have drilled holes in the center and
inserted a pin?
