Tomas, I am. artist, born-again stonemason and boy editor. in '70,
disenchanted with painting, I discovered stonemasonry and forthwith devoted
myself to the craft (retaining, however, my sense of composition; once a
painter . . .). this happened in the south of France, which, with a couple
of thousand years of stonework all around one, was a good place to learn
(actually it was more like remembering than learning, hence the born-again
reference). I was also fortunate to work for a man whose credo was to build
"comme les anciennes" -like the old guys. strangely, though I am an
aficionado of stone carving I've never been drawn to do it, I seem to prefer
the additive to the subtractive process.

a lot of carving, however, finds its way into STONEXUS, the magazine I edit.
this might be seen as a way of taking the physical practice of stonework,
and stone art, into another dimension. STONEXUS is a periodical compendium
of images and writings (both original and previously published) about stone,
stonework and stone art, much of it contributed or suggested by its
subscribers. I hope I will be pardoned for promoting it so shamelessly, but
this publication is not a commercial venture; the objective is to honor the
art and the craft of stonework (in this art, craft is essential; in this
craft there is much artistic potential)

STONEXUS is also, like stone@freelist, an information clearinghouse, a
forum.

and stone@freelist is like a stone nexus. you are, we are, a diverse group
of enthusiastic lithophiles, a valuable resource when needed, often thought-
provoking and a sometimes a source of inspiration.

it has occurred to me that much of the discourse generated here is worthy of
a wider audience, particularly some of the practical/technical info. I
wonder what you-all -and the moderator- think about having select passages
re-presented in the magazine?

keep well and keep up the good work

-and the good "crack" as the Irish say.
