Subject: Cool fresh start

Me? I live in Stamford, Lincolnshire, UK. I'm an invertebrate zoologist
who sits at a desk for hours and hours for much of the week.

I've cobbled together a stone carving CV - it's very slim!!

3rd July 1999 - picked up a dummy and chisled half a letter in slate -
something worked..
In the studio of a letter carver who not only opened his studio as part of
the Cambridge Open Studios season but encouraged people to have a go. I
think his name is Keith Bailey.

Feb 2000 - a sculpture workshop taster session at Wysing.

Aug 2000 - a weekend stone carving course at Wysing, tutored by Louise
Plant. Ancaster limestone.

Feb 2001 - another weekend stone carving course at Wysing, tutored by Andrew
Tansor. Ancaster Limestone.

Summer 2002 - a week in Tout quarry on Portland, tutored by Paul Crabtree
and Hannah Sofaer. Portland Whitbed. Came away with as much reject stone as
I could carry from the pile at Independence.

Experimented with lettering - did a house number in relief for a friend.
Portland.

2003 - a weekend course at Stamford Arts Centre tutored by Martyn Barrat -
my first go with polyphant and alabaster.

2004 Put a piece of polyphant in to the Peterborough Arts House and it was
sold.
Put a piece of alabaster in - and it didn't sell.
Picked up a piece of green slate and carved it - sold it to a friend.
July - entered the alabaster piece and another polyphant piece into the
Peterborough Exhibitions Group (PEG) annual exhibition - sold nothing, but
won a small prize.
Sept 22nd - started a stone carving course at Morley College.

I've also cobbled together a web site www.aqrg44.dsl.pipex.com (hopefully
it'll have updated by the time anyone has a look..)

I'm a rank amateur having fun learning to carve stone; this list is one
facet of that learning. The list also sparks off stone debates and
introduces work from carvers all around the world.

Cheers

Deb
