Hap,
10,000 grit sounds a bit fine. I use no finer than 120 grit.
60/80 is better.
Are you using tungsten-tipped or firesharp chisels?
Sharpen tungsten chisels carefully on a green (soft) bench grinder wheel,
then rub sideways on some flat sandstone, or a cheap oilstone.
Firesharps can be kept sharp by rubbing sideways as well.
Cheap oilstones are good because they are soft (poor quality).
Used dry they wear quickly, but at $1 each it doesn't matter.
Firesharp (carbon steel) tools should not be ground continuously
on a bench grinder becasue they will wear to a stub.
They need to be periodically heated and drawn out to shape,
then tidied up with a file.
They may need re-tempering depending on the type of steel,
a blacksmith could do this for you.
I just go to my local motor mechanic and ask
to use their oxy-acetylene equipment.
Sometimes they charge me $5 for the gas.
Simon
