cool fresh start
Ian Marr...we live at Orange (pop. 38,000), c300 km west of
Sydney, high(1000 m) cool country.Worked a lot on family farm 700 km west of
here at Wilcannia; farm became national park, Ian became full time artist,
much more productive.Always loved working with pen & ink, watercolours,
oils, book illustration, history (B.A. Hons, Dip. Ed., University of
Sydney). Lettercutting in slate my current core work, & absolutely a form
of drawing taken into another dimension. Memorials, literary quotation,
paradisical trees, puns, devotional works, are all part of the genre. Some
favorite sources for inscriptions are Robert Graves, Albert
Camus,C.P.Cavafy, Van Morrison, Hoagy Carmichael & so on.Stone work began at
a supper, in the south, in the early 1990s, where a builder said, "anyone
want any sandstone?"( off the facade of an old bank.) You bet I did! Brief
visits to workshops of artists in England & Ireland, (notably Richard
Kindersley & Ken Thompson) who sustain aspects of deep tradition, were
important to me, & friendships linked to this work. It's not a bad lens to
look at the world through, although our children get very impatient with
quarries & inscriptions when we travel. Cheers, Ian
