figure / ground a.k.a. the tip of the iceberg
hey Bill
thanks for your response!
I appreciate you "winging it" and I savour some morsels from your
words.
Quoted text begins. If this is anything like Gestalt theory (I'm afraid I
haven't done my homework), what an interesting life study.
End of quote.
gestalt, like art, is not really a "study" (a mental activity): this
is more the process and stuff of nourishing, growing,
discriminating (choosing).
an important element I've found for me is "chewing", that is, taking
in and also turning over, through the mind, the memory, the senses,
the images that inhabit my world.
so, from your response, Bill, I need to do some chewing as well.
meaning from your words, will come to me, a little now, a little
later, probably some I'll stay in the dark about (I may have a
question for you later!!) :o)
Quoted text begins.Placing one self in the world, sort
of a foreground / background thing perhaps.
End of quote.
YES.
and I like Clive's comment to you, about the carver, the carving,
just being the tip of an iceberg for the viewer. there is much more
that the viewer brings to the piece.
my wife quoted a painting teacher to me yesterday: "the successful
painting belongs to the viewer"
Quoted text begins.Then one must
always work within one's own habits of method and
material, but seeds are sown perhaps to grow later.
End of quote.
what a lovely image. thanks Bill!
and I appreciate your CV and personal story.
for now,
Oscar
