damn it Clive, I need to quote almost all that you said and this damn
system we are using won't let us. I'm so damn impressed. I've been
trying and trying to get at this myself for months, this failure to
understand the relationship between the visualization and the object.
and where we go wrong.

shortly before my younger sister died, 2 years ago, she was working as
a prosthetist making and fitting lower limbs, often to natives in
Manitoba with amputations due to complications from alcohol induced
diabetes. due to this she was befriended and invited by them to the
reservation and to sweat lodges. eventually she was told her totem
animal, a coyote. shortly before she died she asked me to find her
pictures of coyotes because she wanted to paint them. she was always
the creative one who could paint, cook, weld, whatever. but she grew
too weak to ever do the paintings. all this to say that she showed me a
sketch of a person curled up in a subterranean cavern beneath a tree. a
peaceful, attentive, strangely benevolent coyote sat on the surface
looking down, through the earth as it were, its tail patiently curled
about its feet. it was a dream-vision. it was only a bare sketch but it
worked powerfully. i saw that sketch once and have tried to recreate
it in preparation for creating it in stone and it eludes me. it eludes
me.
