Introducing myself & question
Hi Glenn,
Welcome to the list. Living with stone indeed!
Drilling a long hole can be kind of tricky. My first choice would be to take it to a mill or saw shop. There are a few in my area to choose from, NW Washington state, but maybe you don't have that option in your neighborhood. If not, I would recommend a core drill over rotohammer. Core drills won't shatter the stone, and are easier to guide. If your piece has one or even better two flat true milled surfaces, its pretty simple to jig it so you can drill half way from either end, thus reducing the required drill bit length by half. Best of luck.
happy carving,
tracy powell
