For me, a huge obstacle is encountered when I am fully able to visualize the
form/sculpture. That moment generally comes around 60-75% completion or,
with commissions, when the macquette is complete (or nearly so). Everything
following this moment is hard work and requires much discipline.
Once the element of serendipitous discovery is eliminated, I become bored.
Often, with my commissions, the final piece will differ markedly from the
model. This helps circumvent boredom; luckily, so far, the changes have not
bothered any patrons. I often wonder at the ability of Brancusi, Giacometti,
and others to repeat slight variations of the same form.
