Norman,
I really enjoy the thoughts of Bill, Oscar, and Clive. I have learned much
and can recognize the truth of what they have said , because I see myself in
what they have shared. I don't have the ability to come up with such
thoughts , but I'm glad that some can and will share it with all of us.
Norman, I'm amazed that you can put together the main points of this
discussion and then ask the next logical and interestion question. You have
provoked more thought.
To put this discussion into my own words, comes out sounding like a smart
ass, but I don't mean it to be so.
The words that come out of the sculptor's part of my brain, come from
something profound I read while trying to learn to swing a golf club. You
have to learn to swing stupid. If you have to think, anaylize, and go
through a check list of what to do while you are standing over the ball,
then you can't hit the ball well. You have to have your mind clear of
clutter, take your swing, freely and without reservation. Sounds easy .
My best carvings have always started from a place that have very little
thought to how it will look when finished. I always tell a customer that the
finished piece will differ and be better then a simple model or drawing.
The carving process and my creativity will have the final say.
So swing stupid becomes, less talking and thinking , and more carving.
I hope this dosen't seem over simplifed, but after all, I'm a self taught
duffer!
Thanks,
George Graham
