creativity, gestalt, dreams
I've been mulling something over for sev. days. Someone, I beleive it was Craig, said we must not try to project our dreams into our creations, but rather create works that will make others dream and wonder. I think the sculptor can do both. He also stated that when one tries to create what is in one's minds eye, one is most often unable to do this successfully (I hope I'm right on this, as I mistakenly deleted that email before I'd thought it through). I think I can agree & disagree at the same time. When I carve (contemporary realism) I always start with a dream of sorts, but often while carving, the stone (or wood) will dictate which direction I'm supposed to take. Sometimes I'm right, and I produce what's in my minds eye, sometimes the stone tells me I'm wrong & forces me to carve in a different direction & the sculpture produced is not exactly what I saw originally. But either way I'm pleased, and I always start with an image in my minds eye, a dream, if you will.
The secret lies in willingly going where the stone (or wood) takes me.
