Subject:
What did Eric Gill really mean?
Hello stonies ...
Until a week ago, the Learning Stone website (now About Stone) had a banner
quote from Eric Gill:
"What I ask of a stone carving is that it should look like stone"
Before I put it back on http://aboutstone.org/ I would like to ask members
of this group what they think Gill really meant. My somewhat limited
understanding is that he was simply asserting the primacy of the material
over form. But I'm sure there is more to it than that, and in any case I
have no context for the quote. Why did he say it? Who was he talking to or
writing for? Does it have any resonance for the people here on this list?
