Subject: Greetings from Toulouse

Bon jour listers, I'm over here in Toulouse, France doing some work at
the university. Boy if I have to eat another four course meal or be
forced to drink three different wines at dinner again I'm going to be
sick <g >. Have had a bit of time to sightsee and just wanted everyone to
know that there is a decent museum here for sculpture, mostly 11-15
century crypt work or architectural carvings from the middle ages (i.e.,
pre-rennaisance). Pretty amazing to see what they could do. The museum
is in an old monestary and is called Musee des Augustins, after the
order. I haven't really checked things out artistically, but the city
hall has a wonderful series of murals by Henri Martin, a well known and
excellent post-impressionist painter, depicting "life around Toulouse"
in the 19th century. (He was born in Toulouse). There also is a good
museum for paintings called the Foundacion Bemberg -- it has a nice
collection of paintings by pointillists and Pierre Bonnard.

Toulouse doen't have any local sources of stone, so most of the
buildings were built of brick and hence, the city has been nicknamed the
Pink City (la ville rose). I'm leaving tomorrow am and haven't had a
chance to visit art supply stores to see what kind of stone is
available... Good carving, g2
