The dial was fun to design because I wanted to learn the theory. I've
always been very aware of where the sun is and where the cardinal
directions are. Even in the car I find I navigate almost unconsciously
by the sun. Drives Geri nuts because I don't rely on names and numbers
as much as she does. As for the dial, I plan to install it at my
parent's place in Canada, so its been designed to work there. Its 32"
in diameter to fit as a cover over a vertical piece of culvert that
provides access to their well head. For me, knowing the celestial
mechanics behind dials focusses the mind on our location around the sun
and goes hand in hand with my thoughts regarding where we live as a
species and the things I've talked about recently. The representation
of distraught animals does too I think. I appreciate Jane Armstrong's
carvings a lot.
Did I see any interesting stone in peru? not really. back in '99 I
remember taking a trip to Chavin to see the ruins. this time the only
thing that comes to mind was a large cat (mountain lion?) carved from
cement in front of the hotel in Huaraz. And also the richly iron
stained, glacier polished granite slopes that you can find everywhere
in the mountains where glaciers have retreated. Just like in Yosemite,
several hundred vertical feet of glacier polish flashing in the sun is
pretty awesome.
