Success at drilling long holes in granite
Tom asked,"How do you sharpen masonry drill bits"?
For major reconfiguring work use a bench grinder with either a green
stone(designed to grind carbide) or a diamond wheel.
I have seen these sharpened in the field by clamping whatever grinder you
use on the stone and freehanding on the diamond blade but this takes both
practice and nerve. It also wears the diamond blade unevenly.
Like everything else,if you don't wait till too late you can touch up a
bit with a coarse diamond sharpening stone to keep it cutting more
efficently. This also helps to maintain the correct angles so you aren't left
with a blunt mass of carbide and wondering "what did that look like when I
started?".This usually happens when more than one person is watching and you
need that particular bit to proceed.
