Kathy, if you are cutting concrete , granite, or any other
material that contains silicates, then by all means get the best
dust mask you can afford. Silicate dust gets into the lungs and
grinds away. too much will eventually kill you. Best time to
start protecting yourself is at a young age. Wait till you're a
fossil like me, and the damage has already happened. As to
blade quality, this is sometimes a get what you pay for deal.
However, I don't think your local lumberyard is stocking quality
diamond blades anyway. Give granquartz or granite city tool a
call, and talk with their sales people. The can fit you out
with the right blade for the material, and in the long run save
you money.
