I wanted to say thank you to everyone who chimed in with concern and
advice regarding my very stupid experience with inhaling stone dust.

I just wanted to let you know that I took all of your advice and bought
an appropriate respirator. Secondly, I did see my GP who did a lung
x-ray (clear) and also saw a pulmonary specialist at Duke Medical Center
who ran a series of lung function tests (all normal). She is also going
to consult with an occupational pathologist and will let me know in the
next couple of weeks what type of follow-up checks she will recommend.

Again, I can't thank you enough for your advice in a very scary time!

Julie

Julie,
I'll chime in with what has already been said. Get your lungs checked,
if
for no other reason then to have a record of how you are now, that can
be
used for comparison in future checkups.
Silica particles and many other stone dusts are dangerous . If you are
in a
business that exposes you to dust, get a good , comfortable mask and get

used to using it whenever you might be breathing the stuff.
My mask has replaceable cartridges, and cost about 50 dollars. It is
easy to
get on and off, and you can get different kinds of cartridges for
different
hazards. A dust cartridge is not good enough for paint fumes for
example.
All the good stone suppliers have what you need. My mask is about 3
years
old, and needs to be replaced, so you will get a lot of use from a
quality
product.
Good luck,
George Graham
