Thanks for the information on the "lewis". I know of it by its common shop
name, the lewis pins. I has no idea it was so old. I did know that one
better know what you are doing when using them, or someone could get killed.
I've run into a modern version of the lewis, that is a thick pin with a
closed eye on top for a hook or strap. The pin end goes about 8 inchs into
the stone with a small wedge attached by a small cable that is used to wedge
the shaft against the sides of the hole.
While we are on the subject of lifting gadgets, can you give me a name for
this thing? I only used it once to lift a 12 ton granite block off a
delivery truck for a quarry. The hole and hardware came with the block. It
really was amazing to see this big block picked and set with only one cable
from the top. It all worked great,,,, but I sure didn't get underneath it!
I've never heard of what Norman is describing, but I don't hear much.
