Subject: Looking for plans for sand-filled workbench

Dan;

I have made a carving stand that has a sand-filled top that is removable
-- this was a modification for a design for a carving stand that I built
for my classes at Atlanta College of Art out of 4x4's, 2x6's, and 2x4's.

The basic stand has held half-ton blocks of marble while working, but has
an easy-to-place 24"x24" footprint.

This links to a B&W design drawing, a bill-of-materials, and construction
steps, but the sandbox part I never bothered to draw up -- the sandbox is
just made with 3/4" plywood, 2x2's and 2x4's, fitting over the edges of
the other tabletop. I can go out to the studio and take a picture.

I also have drawn-up a design for a lighter weight version of the carving
stand (2x2's for legs, 2x4's for the apron, and a 3/4" plywood top) that
I made for a local art center where the students don't do any work over
about 100 lbs. (though it will hold 300 lbs. with no problem) -- this
latter design is much easier to stack-up and store in the multi-use
studio space when no carving is being done.

However, I also have a picture of a carving stand design that a friend of
mine had made for her school's studio -- it is not as heavy as my larger
one on the linked page above, nor as lightwieght as my smaller design.
Her design is made of 2x4's, 2x6's, plywood and has a drop-in top of 3/4"
plywood. I am not sure she ever uses it with loose sand -- just sandbags
-- because the 'boxes' are not fitted very tight and you can see daylight
through the cracks. But if you are the builder, you can construct a
well-fitting box (or maybe just use some caulking).

If you want to see more than the page on the link above which only shows
the basic table design, I will be happy to send you (or anyone else on
the list who is interested) email attachment(s) of the other drawing or
pictures of my sandbox -- or the other sandbox design -- if you write me
off-list.

Good Carving to You,
Don
