Daniel,
I'll pass on a few tips about work tables that you can keep in mind.
Drill holes so that all screw heads are well below the surface.
Punch all the nail heads well below the surface. This will help keep down
the scratches to your stone carving.
Have open sides to your work box or table so you can load it down with
stones to help keep it stable and stop your table from moving around while
you are working. Sand can make a mess.
My preference is to not have loose sand in a box on top, but I do like
having at least 2 sides of a box attached to the top to jam a small piece up
against while I'm carving. Otherwise you end up chasing your work around the
table. They also are good to prop a couple bags of sand up against.
If you get into bigger pieces, you will find that the piece will say put
because its to heavy.
If you use some 3\4" plywood and 2x4's, along with screws you will end up
with something very strong and useful. I'd start with the design of the
workbenches you like so much and modify things to suit yourself.
I like to put a small soft rug on my table when I start rolling a piece
around in the finishing stage.
Hope this helps,
George Graham
