water gilding
Norman...I have gilded many picture frames using both oil and water size.
In my experience, the oil size, though less labor intensive, never dries
completely and attempts to burnish the leaf are often destructive. The water size
does dry and the leaf burnishes brightly with an agate burnisher.
Using paint as an undercoat for leaf produces a result similar to oil size.
