Back in the dark ages when I worked for a mason rocking spec
houses in builder subdivisions, a favorite diversion was to send
a new helper off in search of a "rock stretcher" from one of the
other crews. Remember one young fellow being gone for a long
time, and when he finally did get back, he told the boss the
only one he could find was a left handed model, and since he
knew the boss was righhanded, he didn't bother bringing it back.
Always suspected that he got in a nice nap at the bosses
expense.
As to cutting radius shapes, that is something done in
architectural carving shops quite often. Much the same as those
pieces Simon left on a brick overnight. Fundamental theory is
that when you are finished removing all the material you don't
want the result is the shape you do want. How to best remove
the material would be dependant on the stone.. Hammer and
chisel, grinder, rasp, or bed planner. I do suspect there is a
lower limit as to final thickness, and pesonally have not carved
a curved panel thinner than 1-1/2 inches in limestone.
