I would like to start thinking about

for what it is worth, if you are going to build, than build
space with high ceilings. Higher the better... lets the dust
get up and away, and gives you room for an overhead lift system
of some sort. Several comments about concrete floors have been
made. I'm with Simon about the inserts in my shoes. My main
bay has concrete floors so I can wheel about the airforce
surplus monorail hoist (4000lb), and 18 ft plate height. Either
side are lower bays one of which has the tool room and a layout
area also on concrete, and the other is additional carving and
storage space on a stone dust floor. I prefer working on the
dust floor, but am limited to the size pieces I can work on in
there. Lots of ventilation, and one side is mostly open. Again
to get the dust out as it can get thick real quick with a
circular saw or grinder running. Plenty of access for my
forklift or getting the truck in under the lift, and ample space
outside for setting up those big sculptural blocks that only get
worked on when time permits. Main structural components are
used utility poles set 5 feet into the ground and tied together
with doubled 2x12. Found some mismade roof trusses that worked
for my needs and recycled roofing metal for the walls.
Altogether I have about 1000 sq feet under roof for less than
$10.00 per foot, and that includes all the electrical (3 phase
for the compressor).
Foremost though is spending enough time planning, thinking about
what your requirements are and will be, and building what you
need and want.
Good luck,
