mortar for limestone blocks
Do you see plaster used in such a way in your restoration work?
Would the use of plaster be considered to be a permanent material to
assemble stone work?
Have you seen plaster used in outdoor locations? I think not, but I might as
well ask.
30 minute plaster has been the norm for interior dimension stone
installation for well over a hundred years here in the U.S. and is still the
standard, because it gives just enough time during installation to position
the slab or stone before it goes off, and is extremely durable and hard for
being basically gypsum. Tear apart any old marble-clad lobby in America and
you'll find that the primary elements holding the walls in place are
plaster, copper rod, and gravity. There is some movement toward alternate
setting materials such as epoxy-based mortars and the like, but you'll still
find a lot of 30 minute plaster bags on the jobsite.
