George,
Plaster of Paris, aka casting plaster, aka gypsum plaster, cannot be use
outdoors because gypsum is too soluble in water to stand up to moisture. Not
only does the plaster dissolve over time, the gypsum gets redeposited in the
adjacent stone pores and contributes to its deterioration during wetting and
drying cycles.
