Subject: mortar for limestone blocks

Quoted text begins.Do you see plaster used in such a way in your restoration work?
Would the use of plaster be considered to be a permanent material to
assemble stone work?

End of quote.

Yes I find gypsum plaster used in virtually every church monument I
have ever repaired. The quick set, no shrinkage and good adhesive
properties make it a very useful material. The set can be retarded if
you add rabbit skin size. I tend to use putty lime and hydraulic lime
mortars when repairing/rebuilding monuments because gypsum does
deteriorate in damp English churches but gypsum plaster does still come
in useful sometimes and there are plenty of 16th and 17th century
monuments where the gypsum plaster is still in excellent condition.
