mortar for limestone blocks
p.s. Do you know anything about Joseph Aspdin - the guy who more or less
"discovered" Portland cement (the discovery that eventually relegated
stonemasonry to the realm of mere decoration)?
Actually, it may be more a case of "standing on the shoulders of those who
proceeded" or something Newtonian like that.......Smeaton was a major
seminal force in the discovery of Portland Cement, and his fame has lasted
to this day as the namesake of the mortar study currently being done on
Hadrian's Wall by the Heritage folks in Britain. Smeaton deserves at least
as great a share of the credit as Aspdin becuase he was the first to
introduce a scientific method to the analysis of mortars and why they work
or don't work. Check out this link:
