Local stone in North Carolina
Greetings carvers, I've been thinking about obtaining stone for carving
by finding abandoned quarries or places like road cuts where it can be
picked up by hand. I've ordered some geological bulletins from NC on
both soapstone and porophyllite (sp.?) deposits and spoken with one of
the state geologists who says this can be done. Does anyone have any
experience with picking up or carving NC soapstone or porophyllite? Any
experience with other carvable soft stones close to Georgia. I know
about GA. Al. & TN. marble and the GA soapstone that I've seen has too
much mica to leave a nice carving. Any alabaster/gypsum, or serpentine,
or anything else? TIA, g2
