Subject: finishing slate

I've been frustrated by the 50:50 boiled linseed oil:turpentine method
of finishing slate. I find it takes a long time to dry properly
especially so when its cool, it picks up lint and dust while drying,
its a fussy finish that readily shows finger prints and its a bit of a
hassle to repair. So I've tried a variety of alternatives (waxes and
liquids) on a test piece. The best was actually one recommended by the
people I buy stone from. Its a wood product called Finish Feeder. Its
an old formulation and contains beeswax amongst others. It goes on
easily, covers well, can be wiped off and rubbed in 10 minutes, gives a
very black yet flat finish to slate, doesn't show finger prints easily
and can be buffed up if necessary. I don't know how it will stand up
after several years, but it been used on wood for ages, so it probably
OK.
