U.K. conservators usually protect alabaster with an application of
microcrystalline wax which does not discolour and can be easily removed
with white spirit if needs be. Solvol Autosol car chrome cleaner is an
excellent mild abrasive cleaning compound for alabaster but needs to be
cleaned off well with white spirit to prevent a white bloom. Cracks
etc. could be filed with white filler (polyfiller or tetrion) and
retouched with water based acrylic paint to match the character of the
alabaster before waxing.
