drugs and marble
Dear Norman,
Drugs in marble is the reason why my favourite marble (Chillagoe from North
Queensland Australia) got a reputation as not being very good.
When it was first discovered in 1983 the mining leases were bought up by
people with Mafia connections, they cut 20 Tonne blocks of very inferior
quality marble (sugary), drilled 200mm holes into them, packed them full of
drugs, sealed them up and shipped them to Italy.
Customs in those days didn't know anything about marble but I don't think it
took too long for a marble person to wonder why anybody would bother to
export rubbish, especially with very large holes drilled into it!
So, yes it does happen the sad thing is that it'll take a long time before
people thoroughly trust this marble again.
