Tom,

As John as pointed out, nephrite consists of tremolite and/or
actinolite. These two minerals are THE WORST forms of asbestos.
Nephrite carving is asbestos carving, and I have heard, not
surprisingly, that the health record of nephrite carvers is extremely
poor, i.e., early death. I suggest you not go near it with a 30-foot
diamond blade. With most any technique you use, you will wind up
spreading microsopic fibers of it all round your studio, on your
grounds, on your respirator, on your clothes, in your laundry machine,
on your tools. It doesn't go away, and the finer it is the greater
chance of lung cancer. There are plenty of other fine stones much safer
to spend you life with (even a few nice green ones) so why bother?
