Bill,
I looked at the web sites you gave, and then read your comments three more
times. You have a wonderful way with words.
My first reaction was very negative. Looking at the pictures and reading the
description of the methods used filled me with the feeling I get when I'm
listening to someone tell a joke about paraplegics. I want to turn away, but
I can't. Now I know that the artists\machinist\sculptor has a vision and has
worked very hard , and is apparently quite successful in the gallery world,
so I salute the dedication to precision craftsmanship.
I, finally have to settle on the question, why. Why would the artist use
stone? Why use a process that is more difficult then tradition methods? A
cnc machine removes the artists from the stone and the subject at the most
critical time, the roughing out and initial shaping of the piece. Why go to
all this effort to make perfect or distorted deathmasks with no soul?
You have, as usual, provoked thought. After reading and looking at this
work, I end up with an empty, why?
