several years ago our lab tried looking at viruses in a similar way. we
take pictures of viruses (flash frozen to near absolute zero) in the
electron microscope and then "average" thousands of them in the
computer. the digital files could then be output on a CNC (and other
technologies) so we could hold them in hand. but that was never pursued
much and now we just view them on the computer with 3-D goggles. so I
never have to make herpes in stone, thank god. but which version would
have been art?
