I would have to agree with Bill here. A CAM system is merely another tool,
ultimately no different from a chisel or a pointing machine, that aids the
artist in executing his or her idea. Indeed, computer controlled tooling
can be one of the more valuable tools at an artist's disposal, since it
ensures that the artist's original ideas and concepts are carried out with
exactness. Much like Rodin, who created great works of art but (in my
understanding) never sculpted any stone physically. He merely created the
model, created the idea of the finished product, and gave it over to the
stone carvers to execute. Is this any different? It ultimately comes down
to stylistic approaches- do you as the artist fully think through and design
the project before you start chipping at the stone, or are you the type that
"discovers" as you go? If you are the second type of person, then CNC and
CAM technologies are not for you.
