re; conversation
Something that has not entered this conversation is the monetary value
of a one of a kind carving as opposed to a piece carved by machine
that could be repeated many times, much like a print of an original
painting.
I think part of the beauty (and value) of a work of art is uniqueness.
"Discovering" as you carve, even in a well planned piece, is part of
what brings that extra soul to the carving. Because of the uniqueness
of each piece of stone, subtle changes may need to be made, and how
the artist deals with these furthers his/her own personal stamp on the
piece. If you had 2 different stonecarvers work on the same "vision"
of one artist, there would be subtle differences in there work,
whereas a machine would create the same thing each time.
