There seems to be a misconception that the milling
machines do all the work for you! In situation I thought
about about doing it personally, the milling it was to be
to within 1/2 inch of eventual surface, Basically I would
then be about one third the way to the completion; the
three stages of carving being roughing out, carving, and
then finishing, in rather equal proportions. This is not
to mention the huge amount of time and study spent on a
maquette which should be equal in time to the amount of
the three stages of carving combined. This leaves the
mill to do about one sixth of the work. If it is a
plaster impression from life then the mill may do a fifth
of the work.
Please understand, I would pit no method against another
there being plenty of room in the world for everything!
Any dissatisfactions I might express are generated from
within my own body and soul and are brought about by none
other.
