Quoted text begins. That is a huge question about my life and its relation to
art. I find myself on Robben's Island wacking my knuckles
and breathing granite dust to make the simplest of egg
shapes, completely overpowered by the rules of craft. The
superego of the artist conciever is struggling to yet to
live within me. I had rather fancied myself a ruler than
a slave. Kind Robert and other inmates are trying help me
make it easier on myself and get with the system.
End of quote.
Bill,
You are truely a prince among men.
One need only read your thoughtful and flamboyant posts to know you have the
heart of a poet. One need only click on the links you have provided for the
rest of us to see that you have the eyes of an artist. The fact that you
search these things out and share them with us speaks volumes about the
depth of you nobility.
The opinions I posted were done so from the blind and perhaps one should
not believe everything someone standing on a chair and speaking too loudly
says.
It may be intimidating to see what a master of any craft can do.You think to
yourself,"there's no way I'll ever be that good" when you watch these people
work. The trick is to turn that around to "I want to be that good someday"
and use it as a way to motivate yourself to get in there and do it so you
can start getting better at it starting from TODAY.Like the old saying
goes"He who believes he can and he who believes he can't are both right".
As I and others have posted here and elsewhere, there are at least two
elements at work in either art or craft, the journey and the destination. For
some the journey is the key and they take thier pleasure from enjoying the
ride. For others the destination or finished piece is the "everything",and
they use whatever process or manpower(including machines) needed to arrive
as soon as possible with the least amount of wear and tear on both
themselves and thier vision. Can anyone unequivocably state that either is
right?
I can say that it is my opinion that if you continue to do what you are
passionate about and try the best you can to express,by whatever means, the
creativity that lives inside you rather than suppress it you will always be
an artist, even if no-one but you ever sees your work.
Bob
