Hello and Intro
Hello to all stonelisters.
My name is John Klassen and I have been making sculptures for about 10 years or so as a sort of sideline aka expensive hobby. I started working with stone about 5 years ago. Mostly hardstones for jewellery. Career wise, I am a metalworker, doing architectural work like fountains, storefronts and just about anything that has to look nice in brass, bronze, stainless steel or copper.
I have been sitting in the safety of the shadows for about 5 months or so enjoying some of the topics and exchanges. Currently, I am at the completion stage of a granite and bronze sculpture and would like to know of a final finish to apply to the granite to get the wet look. Right now it is at the 1500 grit stage but I would really like to bring it up a bit more.
When I carve hardstones like jade or quartz I normally finish with a Cerium Oxide slurry but this time I don't think it's going to work as well as I would like. I think it needs a penetrant of some sort. I'm open to suggestions if anyone can help me out.
It's funny that this particular piece of stone was smashed off the front of a building with a dump truck, used as a doorstop for about five years and now is almost a finished carving. I guess everybody could tell a strange tale about how they got to where there are.
I don't have a website but would be happy to exchange pics, off list, when the piece is finished. E-mail me at jaklassen2001@------------
Anyway, I have to go. Good carving to you all and Happy New Year.
The safety of the shadows is calling me.
John
