Dear Bill,
The cheque's in the mail mate.
- "how has "Art" not dared?
And what is so obvious? Doesn't "Art" do about everything
under the sun?
Just which sins are you impugning to my kind? What have we
been so ignorant of. I shudder to imagine it.-
To notice that a car is just a cart with the horses on the inside, or that
we are the sum total of ALL that has gone before us or that ultimately
nothing is particularly new or the process of reductionism in art of the
last century has only led to one thing - a hugely reduced range of options.
And from my perspective most importantly we have not dared to re-ask some of
the questions that produced those millions of isms because we may too scared
to notice that we would come up with very different answers today.
I think it is always much more helpful to ask if the reduction of art to a
single dumb cube was the only possible answer to the almost universally
heartfelt belief that less can be more.
We have not dared to assess whether asking the question "what can be art?"
was a horrible arrogant mistake, a horrible waste of time and worse still a
great waste of the many personal freedoms that we thought that we had
gained. Even the scientists were quicker than the artists to notice that
they'd made some horrible mistakes in the 60's etc, mind you the
consequences of their actions had rather more tangible effects on society,
the environment and the planet's wellbeing than the humble "cube".
To me its best to see the cube etc as the art equivalent of straightening
out the Mississippi (because it causes more problems than it ever solves).
Very Best regards
Clive
