Stone Quotes
Since some of you profess pleasure at visual offerings of
work from the net I am going to push it and offer some
Artist Statements without pictures with my thoughts below.
What do you think? Please grant me licence to provoke.
Makoto Okuno
Invisible area is distinguished from the visible by a Cocoon.
The space wrapped within this boundary is Inside, and the
other space, which is not wrapped, is Outside.
Let's say we distinguish the inner part inside the Cocoon
from our space, the outer part with the Cocoon acting as
the boundary. If our space is closed, the inner and outer
parts exist independently and with little knowledge of the
other.
So, let's turn the Cocoon inside out as we would a rubber
bag that was ripped and rendered useless. Then, the Inside
becomes the Outside, and our space outside of the Cocoon
becomes the Inside.
Bill-- Beautiful thinking. The true excitement of
entering the stone. Very much what Jiro Sugawara is
pursuing in his "Inside Out" series.
Jesse Salisbury
People generally think of stone as solid, permanent and
unmoving. However, as an artist I am constantly learning
new ways to reduce stone to rubble and dust. The more I
work with stone the more I understand and harness the
stone's weaknesses and its desire to split, move and bend.
Bill takes issue with Jesse. Stone is not a mule to put
to harness plowing. I wish he had said "pursue" or
"explore" instead of harness. Otherwise I like the
thought
