Subject:
stone pergola
A well-heeled acquaintance of mine wants to build a stone pergola of
sorts in his backyard. The pergola is to be built from hand-split gray
granite. There will be four uprights placed in a square, with four
lintels across them. A box essentially. Each upright is to be 18 inches
square and 11 feet long. The same goes for the lintels. I assume one
pair of lintels will be on top of the other. The uprights are to be
placed on a reinforced concrete slab, one foot below grade.
I'm not sure if this a structurally sound idea. Any comments about the
stability, safety, etc of the structure are most welcome. I'm
concerned.
