Introduction :)
I'll add my welcome :-) I'd also modify Gary's recommendation - I
haven't carved very much and in light of that 'experience' I'd caution
against alabaster - it's a hard task master. It's soft and easy to shape:
it lulls you in to a false sense of security hiding it's bruises until you
try to finish off your work. Then it shouts out and shows where it has been
hit too hard. Soapstone is much more forgiving :-) I'd also chip in
(sorry, couldn't resist) that working with limestone early on is lovely: it
allows you to get sharp edges and polishes beautifully: and you can lay in
to it with a much greater sense of un-restraint.
