Subject: Introduction :)

Greetings listers - Deb's comments about alabaster are right on and
I didn't mention that I almost never use a hammer and chisel on it
anymore, and I'm super careful with power tools (and always carve it on a
soft surface like a sandbag)-- too many broken pieces. Also, if you're
going to drill a hole to mount it, try and drill it (very gently -- check
the archives on this) before you get too far into your carving. Alabaster
can fracture easily and you don't want this to happen after you've spent
two months working on a piece. I mainly mentioned alabaster because it is
beautiful to carve and you should have inexpensive sources of it there in
NM. Soapstone doesn't suffer from many of these problems (although I've
had my last two pieces of soapstone crack mysteriously) and is a great
stone to start with. atb, g2
