Introduction :)
You have had some good advice for John and Gary and
perhaps others on getting started.
How about some bad advice from a bad man?
I say get in there and bust it up! Why wait two months to
break something when you can break it in the first ten
minutes? You very likely could spend years being overawed
by the preciousness of your material and wracking your
brain for complexities of design worthy of its graceful
benignity. Hell I say. Bust it up. See how it breaks so
you'll know when to expect it. See what it can take so
you can give it everything you've got. Alabaster can do
some cool stuff if you crush it and pitch it. Hit it I
say! If not now, when?
Do not spend days getting a "wet look". Don't even polish
half. Discover texture. NOW! The rock will offer gifts
of texture far beyond a reduced, featureless polished
skin. I know only the Liebson book, and he will push you
to polish. That combined with my own narrowness of view
made it take years to discover texture and some of the
natural capabilites of the stone.
Stone is the commonest, least precious substance on the
earth. Dig in.
