Material removal
Quoted text begins.I am working on a piece of translucent alabaster. I would like to make
a box or bowl and am wondering the best way to remove the inside
material. It is about a 10-15lb piece. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
End of quote.
I wouldn't mind hearing some suggestions about that myself, Lisa. I usually
go at it with an angle grinder or Dremel, carving ruts and creating high
areas, then knocking them off gently with a hand chisel, scratching with my
fingernails, biting at it with my teeth . . . It gets the job done
eventually, but there must be a better way. One of the sculpture catalogs
(House of Sculpture? Montoya?) has something called a bracelet rasp that
looks just perfect for such things, though I haven't tried it. It would be
slow, though - by hand. Anyone else have any ideas?
