Quoted text begins.they have shale in them that keeps peeling off in layers even though
she put some sealer on them
End of quote.
I have been around on this one many times. Its the freeze/thaw cycle that
will always pop of layers of this type of sand stone (and many others) As of
yet I dont think that a sealer that will help has been made. What tends to
happen is the sealer traps the water in the stone then upon a freeze your
back to square one. I work in restoration of historic buildings here in NM
and we believe that the stone must breath if its going to stay in one peice.
That is why most stone on these buildings have a large amount of 'pitch' on
them. The greater the surface area the more evaperation, the better the
stone lasts. My partner is a landscaper and her rule is, don't position the
stone in the shade.
