Christo and Goldsworthy
I've been looking at Christo's gates going up, and all the excitement
generated by the draping and I can't help but think that the gates are just
obstructing the view. I've done more then my share of walking in the great
outdoors and the excitement and joy shown by the people who are happy about
the gates remind me those who have rediscovered their park. Rocky mountain
national park it aint, but central park is the best Manhattan has to offer.
It seems to me that Christo and his wife are giving New Yorkers an
artificial frame for people to see their world through, fresh and new.
Andy Goldsworthy seems to be doing the same thing , only even more fleeting.
I know he does large stone projects in natural settings, but I'm struck by
his sculptural, artistic moments that can only be seen because a picture is
taken before the set is gone. His work with water, ice, snow, flowers and
anything else found lying about in the forest is fascinating to me, and can
only be seen when I look at it framed in a photograph.
I see a connection between Christo and Goldsworthy. Sort of two sides of the
same page.
I hope some of our more literate observers can shed some light on the work
of these artists, and ,,,why they do it.
